Name und Sache stammen aus dem It., das uns – zum Teil durch frz. Vermittlung – auch andere Bezeichnungen aus dem Bereich des Post- und Verkehrswesens lieferte wie ↑ Porto, ↑ franko, ↑ frankieren und ↑ Kurier. Die ersten postähnlichen Einrichtungen wurden im 14./15. Jh. in Italien vom Papst und auch von kleineren weltlichen Fürsten zur raschen Beförderung von Nachrichten und Briefen geschaffen. Beförderungsmittel war der reitende Bote. Die Beförderungsroute war in zahlreiche, von einem Postmeister verwaltete Stationen eingeteilt, an denen die Pferde und auch der Bote gewechselt wurden.
Eine derartige Wechselstation wurde im It. posta genannt (eigentlich »festgesetzter Aufenthaltsort«, aus lat. posita statio oder mansio; vgl. ↑ Posten).
Auf die gesamte Beförderungseinrichtung übertragen, gelangte das Wort am Ende des 15. Jh.s ins Frz. (als poste) und ins Dt. und bezeichnete dann auch das Postamt und die durch die Post beförderten Briefe.
